Some of the ending themes are forgettable and the music takes a while to truly match the scale and magnificence of the series proper. Additionally, the film series stumbles choppily at first before truly hitting its monumental stride.

On 3D CGI can be off-putting when non-mechanical objects rendered in such a style look worse than Dozle in a car accident. It would be unwise to herald such a title as absolute perfection there are blemishes in this magnificent work of art. As such, it is as charming and emotionally evocative as the franchise has ever been, continually asserting itself among the best animated series this decade has to offer. Origin is cinematic brilliance, and one of the finest in modern manga adapting and modern anime storytelling. It is the epitome of what Gundam is and was, and is the type of work only a master can craft. I also manage Mecha Damashii and do toy reviews over at .Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is an ode to excellence, an art habitually outdoing itself. Mobile Suit Gundam is currently released on Blu-ray and DVD, with both the first and second collection available at Right Stuf Anime.ĭisclosure: Right Stuf Anime sent me copies of the series on Blu-ray for this review.įollow me on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. In that regard, even after all this time, Mobile Suit Gundam is almost peerless. As we don’t really watch anime for the animation, we watch it for the story and characters. While the animation is basic, even for the period, it approached the then very clichéd world of mecha anime with a fresh sense of realism and human honesty.įor that reason alone, every person that enjoys and appreciates the medium should own this anime. Mobile Suit Gundam’s story and characters are what has propelled this saga into the immense property it is today.

With all that said though, this is an amazing collection. Bar that though and a 30th anniversary staff interview, where they berate all the corners they had to cut to get the series made, this is a very straightforward and simple release. It offers English subtitles for the Japanese audio, and it also has a decent enough English dub.

This new set is also quite bare bones in terms of its options. As it marks the first real shift away from super powered mecha and treats the mobile suits as factory built machines. That said, the mecha design by Kunio Okawara definitely still stands up after all this time. In that sense, the image quality is definitely a step up over the DVD versions but the original Mobile Suit Gundam is not a series that should be revered for its animation in the first place. The remastering then of this series then is an obvious challenge and they did the best they could with what they had, namely from old 16mm masters. To the extent that this new Blu-ray collection actually omits one of the episodes, specifically the fifteenth episode, as Tomino didn’t think the animation was good enough to warrant an English dub. However, while this is a Blu-ray release and the image quality is definitely far improved over the prior DVD releases, the original Mobile Suit Gundam is not a well-animated series. To think that we not only have the original Mobile Suit Gundam widely available and on a format like Blu-ray, is still not something I am entirely used to. This is because I can remember a time when the only Gundam we had in the West were the novels written by Yoshiyuki Tomino, excellently translated by Frederik L. The unfettered start if you will and to have it on Blu-ray is both strange and remarkable. This series then is a relic before all that happened.

This then resulted in the edited down movie trilogy, which is what the main timeline is now based off. It was only later when model kits depicting some of the mobile suit variations, or MSV, in a more realistic way did the Gundam franchise really take off. What’s interesting here though is that on Mobile Suit Gundam’s initial airing, it actually bombed and nobody wanted to buy the toys. The story is generally very well crafted in this series and the main characters are all warm and likable. There are both good and bad people on either side and the characters simply want to survive. The other facet to all this is that while Mobile Suit Gundam is a story about war, it is very honest in showing that no one side is good in the conflict. This makes their rivalry unique in the annals of storytelling, as how can you kill your enemy when you know who they fundamentally are. (Photo credit: Sunrise, Right Stuf Anime)
